Don't stress, it's under control: Neural correlates of stressor controllability in humans

2021

Abstract Animal research has repeatedly shown that control is a key variable in the brain's stress response. Uncontrollable stress triggers a release of monoamines, impairing prefrontal functions while enhancing subcortical circuits. Conversely, control over an adverse event involves prefrontally mediated downregulation of monoamine nuclei and is considered protective. However, it remains unclear to what extent these findings translate to humans. During functional magnetic resonance imaging, we subjected participants to controllable and uncontrollable aversive but non-painful electric stimuli, as well as to a control condition without aversive stimulation. In each trial, a symbol signalled …

Reliability and validity study of the Finnish version of the Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire (CPAQ).

2012

Acceptance has been discovered to be successful in improving quality of life when adjusting to chronic pain. Instead of avoiding and controlling the pain, the goal is to confront the pain and to live a value directed life. Thus far, there has not been an instrument in Finnish to assess the acceptance of chronic pain. This study aimed at translating the Chronic Pain Acceptance Questionnaire-(CPAQ)-into Finnish and assessing its reliability and validity.Eighty-one persons with different types of chronic pain responded to the CPAQ, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), RAND-36 and questions of sociodemographic and pain-related variables. The responders' ages varied from 16 to 83 years (mean = 48…

Wealth Creation and Science Research : Science Research, the root of wealth in our Knowledge Society, is endangered

Two vastly dierent historical stages in wealth creation are the traditional one based on agriculture during past millennia, and the one based on science research in our present globalizing knowledge society. The dierences happen to be so considerable, and the emergence of the second stage relatively so recent, that the awareness of the full range of consequences regarding the proper pursuit of science research, which is the root of wealth in our knowledge society, is missing to an extent that may, even in the medium term, seriously endanger the sustainability of modern human society. Here is presented a brief account of some of such dangers, following which a parable, entitled "Is it a mere…

Emotional and cognitive adjustment in abused children

1994

Research on the impact of maltreatment on children has increased in the last years, as there is a need to design appropriate treatment strategies. Social, cognitive, and emotional areas may be affected in these children. This research is aimed to study the psychological functioning of child victims, particularly in their emotional and cognitive adjustment. Nineteen children (10.3 years old) with case histories of at least 2 years of physical and emotional parental abuse and a group of 26 nonmaltreated children (9.4 years old) matched in socio-economic characteristics and coming from the same community area were compared in depressive symptomatology and attributional style by using the stand…

A translational paradigm to dtudy the rffects of uncontrollable stress in humans

2020

Theories on the aetiology of depression in humans are intimately linked to animal research on stressor controllability effects. However, explicit translations of established animal designs are lacking. In two consecutive studies, we developed a translational paradigm to study stressor controllability effects in humans. In the first study, we compared three groups of participants, one exposed to escapable stress, one yoked inescapable stress group, and a control group not exposed to stress. Although group differences indicated successful stress induction, the manipulation failed to differentiate groups according to controllability. In the second study, we employed an improved paradigm and co…

Where and How Do They Happen ?

This is a two part paper. The first part, written somewhat earlier, presented standard processes which cannot so easily be accommodated within what are presently considered as physical type realms. The second part further elaborates on that fact. In particular, it is argued that quantum superposition and entanglement may better be understood in extensions of what we usually consider as physical type realms, realms which, as it happens, have so far never been defined precisely enough.

Heisenberg Uncertainty in Reduced Power Algebras

2011

The Heisenberg uncertainty relation is known to be obtainable by a purely mathematical argument. Based on that fact, here it is shown that the Heisenberg uncertainty relation remains valid when Quantum Mechanics is re formulated within far wider frameworks of {\it scalars}, namely, within one or the other of the infinitely many {\it reduced power algebras} which can replace the usual real numbers $\mathbb{R}$, or complex numbers $\mathbb{C}$. A major advantage of such a re-formulation is, among others, the disappearance of the well known and hard to deal with problem of the so called "infinities in Physics". The use of reduced power algebras also opens up a foundational question about the r…

Four Departures inMathematics and Physics

2011

Much of Mathematics, and therefore Physics as well, have been limited by four rather consequential restrictions. Two of them are ancient taboos, one is an ancient and no longer felt as such bondage, and the fourth is a surprising omission in Algebra. The paper brings to the attention of those interested these four restrictions, as well as the fact that each of them has by now ways, even if hardly yet known ones, to overcome them.

Block Universe - According to the Formalism X4 = ict Space-time is Timeless

2010

According to the formalism d = v x t fourth dimension of space-time is spatial too. In formula X4 = ict symbol t represents numerical order of material change i.e. motion running in space. Flow of time is flow of numerical order of materal change that we measure with clocks. Fundamental unit of numerical order t0,t1,t2...tn of material change is a Planck time tp. Numerical order of material change tn-1 is "before" numerical order of material change tn equivalently as natural number n-1 is "before" natural number n. Flow of physical time is a flow of numerical order t0,t1,t2...tn of material change and runs in a timeles 4D space.
